He graduated in 1976 from Hampshire College in Amherst, \nMassachusetts, where he studied biochemistry and literature.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> A portion of his thesis on nature writing was published in the now \ndefunct outdoor magazine Mountain Gazette. In 1977 he was employed as a \nwriter in Washington D.C. for the Living Wilderness magazine, then moved\n to Alaska where he worked as the managing editor of the Homer Alaska \nNews from 1978 to 1979. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1979 to 1985 he was a staff writer with the Washington Post,  \nassigned variously to the Metro section, the Investigative desk and the \n Style section. In 1985 he moved to New York, and began a magazine  \nfreelance career. He has written for over forty national magazines,  \namong them the <em>New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Harper\u2019s, \nOutside, Vanity Fair, Men\u2019s Journal, Vogue, GQ,  Conde Nast Traveler, \nSmithsonian <\/em>and <em>National Geographic Adventure.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is a former contributing editor of Esquire, a\n correspondent for Outside, a contributing editor of Men\u2019s Journal, a \ncontributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and a contributing \neditor of National Geographic. He has won many journalism awards \nincluding the Pannell Kerr Forester Award in 1984 for financial writing,\n the 1992 Lowell Thomas award for travel writing, and the 1989 National \nMagazine Award for feature writing. He was also nominated as a National \nMagazine Award finalist in feature writing in 1990 and 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">His articles have been anthologized in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Out-Noosphere-Outside-Magazine\/dp\/0671754661\">\u201cOut of the Noosphere\u201d <\/a>(1994),  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Best-Outside-First-Vintage-Departures-ebook\/dp\/B0043EWVG0#reader_B0043EWVG0\">\u201cThe  Best of Outside\u201d<\/a> (1997), \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wild-Stories-Best-Mens-Journal\/dp\/1400048303\">Wild Stories: The Best of Men\u2019s  Journal\u201d<\/a> (2002), \u201cParis Observed\u201d (2002), \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Esquires-Big-Book-Great-Writing\/dp\/1588162982\">Esquire\u2019s Big Book of Great  Writing<\/a>\u201d (2003), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Committed-Tell-Stories-Commitment-Marriage\/dp\/158234499X\">&#8220;Committed: Men Tell Stories of Love, Commitment and Marriage&#8221;<\/a> (2004), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Best-American-Sports-Writing-2008\/dp\/0618751181\">\u201cBest Food Writing\u201d<\/a> (2006),  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Best-American-Sports-Writing-2008\/dp\/0618751181\">\u201cBest American Sports  Writing\u201d <\/a>(2008), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/New-Age-Adventure-Years-Writing\/dp\/1426205465\">\u201cThe New Age Adventure: National Geographic Adventure<\/a>\u201d  (2009), He  contributed a long article \u201cFear.com\u201d to The Project for the  State of  the American Newspaper series which has been collected in  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.in\/dp\/1557288089\">\u201cBreach of Faith, volume 2.<\/a>\u201d He is the author of two nonfiction books,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Afterwards-Youre-Genius-Medicine-Metaphysics\/dp\/1573227765\">\u201cAfterwards,  You\u2019re a Genius: Faith, Medicine and the Metaphysics of  Healing\u201d<\/a> (1998)  and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Good-Morning-Midnight-Life-Death\/dp\/1573223794\">\u201cGood Morning Midnight: Life and Death in the Wild\u201d <\/a> (2003) \u2013 both  published by Riverhead Books.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He lives in New York City with his wife the writer &amp; editor <a href=\"http:\/\/katebetts.com\/\">Kate Betts<\/a>.
